Our Story
Three Decades of Teaching That Travels
What began in 1991 as a single faculty of forty students is now a university of nine departments and more than twelve thousand students across undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes.
What has not changed is the approach: small cohorts, teaching staff who are active in their fields, and assessment built around real work rather than recall. Seminar groups are capped at eighteen, and every student is assigned a personal tutor who stays with them for the length of their degree.
Our graduates leave with a portfolio, not just a transcript — and a network of alumni working in more than sixty countries.

Our History
Three Decades of Milestones
From forty students in a single building to a campus community of twelve thousand — the moments that shaped who we are.

1991
The doors open
Founded as a single faculty of business and economics with forty students, twelve staff and one building on the north side of what is now the main quad.

1998
Science and engineering arrive
The first laboratories open, bringing physics, chemistry and civil engineering onto the campus and taking the student body past two thousand.

2005
Research standing established
Our first doctoral programmes are validated and the university is awarded independent research degree-awarding powers.

2012
The library never closes
Following a students union campaign, the library moves to twenty-four hour opening in term time — still one of the things students mention most.

2019
Nine faculties, one campus
Design and media joins as the ninth faculty, completing the current structure, and the fabrication labs and studios open to every discipline.

Every programme is led by staff who are active in their discipline — as researchers, clinicians, engineers or founders. That means the case studies are current, the briefs are real, and the feedback comes from people who do the work.
- Research from year two. Undergraduates join a research group in their second year, with funded summer placements available.
- Supervision that scales down, not up. Postgraduates work alongside supervisors on funded projects with industry and public-sector partners.

Where Our Graduates Ended Up
Three alumni on what the degree actually gave them.
I left with a portfolio of four real client projects. In interviews nobody asked about my grades — they asked about the work, and I had the work to show them.
Joining a research group in second year completely changed my plans. I went in expecting to graduate and leave, and stayed for a funded PhD instead.
The placements were the difference. Four weeks on a ward in first year told me more about the profession than a year of lectures could have.
